.....City maps were useless in our pursuit of dirt and eventually, we discovered a local cartography business that printed detailed maps to suit our needs. Elevation, distance and physical attributes were now within our purview, a serious step up from the guesswork of a misguided out and back and getting lost. All my dog-eared maps were usually housed at the bottom of my backpack, at the ready for an instant foray into parts unknown. They proved to be valuable sources of info afield, nevertheless, primitive by today's technological advances (GPS)...Oh, the good old days!
