WTB modified and rebranded Harlan Meyer's Hi-E hubs so that the bearings could be externally serviced without unlacing the wheel, but there was a flaw. Making the flanges out of 7075 aluminum looked good on paper with its high tensile strength and hardness. However, the material corrodes easily even with anodization, and a flange under spoke tension really needs some give. This is an instances were a softer material helps distribute concentrated loads better.
