Do you know the significant differences between a Hi-E hub (top), a Cunningham modified hub (middle), and a WTB modified hub (bottom)? All of these hubs start out with a Hi-E design by Harlan Meyer in the 1970s. The cartridge bearings are captivated on the outside by the hub flanges, meaning to replace the bearings you need to unlace the wheel (!) to pull the flanges off the hub shell. Both of the modified hubs have the outside lip of the flange machined off so the bearings can be removed from the outside. However, doing so means the flanges will collapse into the center of the hub shell. Cunningham prevented this by securing the flanges in place with rivets. The WTB version replaces the center shell with one slightly larger in diameter, with shoulders machined on the ends to pick up the inside lip of the flange. You will notice that the difference in the shell and lip is quite small on the WTB version.
