Details about VINTAGE IBIS DROP BAR / SPECIALIZED RM-3 as Found on CUNNINGHAM Bikes 26mm
Alright all you vintage mountain bike drop bar kooks (said with much affection, because we're all, well, you know). This is the one you've been looking for. The IBIS drop bar. Made for IBIS by Nitto with production assistance from Specialized - same as the WTB RM-2 bar. The IBIS bar more closely mimics the drop handlebars found on the bikes of Charlie Cunningham and Jacquie Phelan. In fact, you don't find that WTB drop bar on their bikes, but custom bent and formed Cinelli bars. This IBIS RM-3 is designed around a Cinelli Model 65 bar with larger radius bends at the top and a flare out of the dropped portion. The flare is not a flare like the WTB bar, but the ends are turned out. The Model 65 shape (aka the criterium bend) is shaped to give your forearms more clearance to the bar when in the drops and out of the saddle sprinting or climbing.
I don't know if I've ever seen these on ebay or for sale, so I'm going to have fun with this one. And you will to. Super low opening bid, no reserve, blah, blah, blah. The width at the brake lever is 42cm. The ends have been cut down a bit to better accommodate finger-tip shifters. They're used, but not much. I think these were on a bike I only rode for about 6-8 months back in 1989 or 90. Go.
