Sometimes it is the mundane aspects that take the most time and consideration. In this case it is a quill stub to attach the LD stem to the fork. A lot of these stems got mounted to a stub brazed into the steerer, but there are a couple of reasons why this approach isn't a good idea. One is the rigid connection which puts a concentrated load on the top of the thin steerer. Also, you need a very complete braze down below the headset threads to be safe. A quill stub is heavier but avoids these challenges. Here a sleeve needed to be braze to the top of the quill and turned down for the stem to clamp tight. Even without a bolt there is no wiggle.
